Computing

Computing at Sladefield

At Sladefield Infant School the children are eager to adapt to an ever increasing digital world and are always willing to develop their Computing Skills.

A high quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and how coding digital systems work, and use this knowledge in programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding will ensure pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. This enables pupils to become resilient individuals who are digitally literate and confident enough to express and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in an ever changing digital world.

Main program of study

To enhance the children’s computational and critical skills, the main program of study for Computing is the Purple mash schemes of work, which are adapted to suit the individual needs of the children. This has given the children the opportunity to explore and use other resources.

E-Safety within the curriculum

As part of a cross curricular approach E-safety has been taught as an integral part of the curriculum and is embedded in the Computing and PHSE curriculum. This approach will ensure our children will become confident digital citizens in an ever changing world.

In Key Stage 1 the children have additional allocated times that provide opportunities for a cross curricular thematic approach. These slots provide time for staff to focus on and revisit areas or build upon the children’s experiences.

In year 1, children have been focussing on Grouping and Sorting, Pictograms, Lego Builders, Maze Explorers, Animated Stories, Coding, Spreadsheets, Technology and Online Safety.

Whilst children in year 2, have been focussing on Coding, Online Safety, Spreadsheets,

Questioning, Creating Pictures, Effective Researching, Making Music and Presenting Ideas.
